EUGENE MATTHEWS

Eugene Francis Matthews was born on August 22, 1932 in Garske, North Dakota to Roy Matthews and Gertrude Zettler.
Gene worked as a Mathematician for the U. S. Army Missile CMD at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, AL where he retired at the age of 55 years, in 1987.
Gene married Helen Marie Lyles on June 1, 1955. Helen was born in Lawrence County, Tennessee (St. Joseph) on May 25, 1935. Helen and Gene have two children; Mark Eugene and Terrie Lynn.

Helen
Lyles Matthews, born May 25, 1935 to the late Willie C. and Bertha Lyles was
the third of five children. Helen was raised in St. Joseph, Tennessee
and attended elementary school there. She graduated high school at
Loretto High. After graduation she worked at the Lawrence County Court
House as Deputy Circuit Court Clerk. While still working at the Court House she
married Eugene F. Matthews on June 1st, 1955. They lived in an apartment in
Loretto until moving to Florence, AL to live while Eugene (Gene) attended Florence State
College, now University of North
Alabama and received his bachelor
degree in Mathematics.
We lived in Florence until moving to St. Louis, MO then to Columbus, OH where Gene attended the Ohio State University to study Geodesy. After leaving Ohio we move back to St. Louis and in 1962 we moved to Huntsville, AL.
In Huntsville, Helen has been very active as a volunteer as chairman of the Lakewood School Clinic with training from The American Nation Red Cross. She also volunteers with The Salvation Army with a group from her church, Grace United Methodist. Other things dear to her heart is her bowling. After joining the Huntsville Women’s Bowling Association in 1962 she has served the bowler’s of Huntsville, State of Alabama, and The International Women’s Bowling Associations.
She was elected to the HWBA Board of Directors in 1970 and served as a director until 1980 when she was elected 1st Vice President then elected President of HWBA in 1987 and served until 2006. She was elected to the Alabama Board of Directors and was elected to the Hall of Fame in the Huntsville Association as well as the Alabama Women’s Bowling Association. On the Women’s International level she served as delegate 20 years and bowled in 25 International Tournament. She is also a member of the National Women Bowler’s Writers Association and is the 1st Vice President of the Helen Duval Scholarship Club.
Gene and Helen have traveled all of the United States with the exception of Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii. They also traveled to Mexico, Canada and Paradise Island and Nassau. We have now enjoyed 53 years of marriage and have two wonderful children and four beautiful grand children. They now live at 113 Nobleton Lane. Huntsville, Alabama 35806. E-mail onepres@aol.com.
