Solon Ernest Matthews

Solon and Mini Smith Matthews
Solon Matthews found dead Sunday evening, June 5, 1955; apparently suffered a heart attack. Neighbors found his body across a windowsill at his home where he lived alone. He must have locked himself out of the house and suffered a heart attack while trying to enter through the window. Matthews was an employee of the A.G. Beckman Sawmill.
Funeral services were on Tuesday afternoon, June 7th at Mount Zion Church on West Point Road, Lawrenceburg, TN Rev. Henry Cooper of Madison officiated. Burial was in the Mount Zion Cemetery. Barnett and Moore Funeral Home was in charge.
Three daughters survive: Viola Perry and Frances Griggs of Toledo, OH; Mrs. James Kimbrough of Madison, TN; Two sons; William Matthews and Wilson Matthews, both of Toledo, OH. Two sisters survive; Viola Slagle, and Virgie Perry; three brothers, Floyd, John, and Brice (Price) of Loretto.

Nora (Hanora Mae) Matthews, age 75, of Prattville, AL; formerly of Loretto, TN, died Monday, September 13, 1982 in Prattville, AL from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
A native of New Hampshire, Nora is survived by her mother, Elizabeth M. Fogarty of Methuen, Mass; and three sons: Floyd W. Matthews of Santa Cruz, CA; William M. Matthews and John E. Matthews, both of Montgomery, AL. Two sisters also survive.

John D. Matthews

John D. Matthews of Loretto died Tuesday at the Lawrence County Hospital. He was a retired sawmill worker.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 PM at the Mount Zion Church on Knob Creek with Rev. E.J. Polk and Rev. Frank Stone officiating. He was buried in the church cemetery with Osborn Funeral Home in charge.
A native of Lauderdale, AL; he was the son of the late J.H. and Margaret Venable Matthews; and a member of the Methodist Church.
Mr. Matthews wife was the late Jane Walters Matthews. He is survived by sisters Mrs. C. O. Slagle of Loretto; and Virgie Perry of West Point; two brothers, Roy, of Loretto, TN and Floyd of Nashville, TN.

Lola Odessa Barker Butner

Lola Odessa Butner, 62, of Camellia Avenue, Homeland, died Wednesday, April 10, 1991 at Bartow Memorial Hospital in FL
Born in Limestone County, AL, Mrs. Butner moved to Homeland from Fort Meade in 1984. She was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons; Joe Butner of Bedford, TX and Rev. Albert A. Butner of Plant City; a daughter, Edith Roper of McDonald, TN; three sisters, Alma Hagood of Bartow, Naomi Kemp and Lillian Evans of Athens, AL; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held at 10:00 AM in Whidden-McLean Funeral Home chapel with Dr. Diehl Turner and Dr. Cecil Chance officiating. Interment will be in the Wildwood Cemetery.
Born in Limestone County, AL, Mrs. Butner moved to Homeland from Fort Meade in 1984. She was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church.

Alma Rebecca Barker Hagood

Funeral for Alma Rebecca Hagood, 87, of Bartow, FL; formally of Pulaski, TN, was held Saturday, Jan 29 at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow. Burial was in Wildwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Hagood died Wednesday, January 26 at Bartow Memorial Hospital.
She lived in Bartow for 53 years, moving from Pulaski. She was a dietitian for the Polk County School Board for 17 years and was a member of Highlands Church of Christ, Fin and Feathers Club of Polk County and Bartow/Mulberry Golden Age Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan M. Hagood.
She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Edwards and Mavis Langdale, both of Bartow, FL; two sons, Orville Hagood of Ocala, FL and Virgil Hagood of Ft. Pierce, FL; two sisters, Naomi Kemp and Lillian Evans, both of Athens, AL; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The funeral for Ila Mae Claxton Burns, age 90, of Athens, AL will be held at 1:30 PM today, at Limestone Chapel with Bobby Ray Hudson and Malcolm Andrews officiating. Burial will be is Roselawn Cemetery in Athens.
Mrs. Burns died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at home. She was born Oct l, 1013 in Limestone County. She was a member of Jackson Drive Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Erdie Claxton and one daughter, Mauvolean Gey.
She is survived by her husband, Ruben J. Burns, of Athens; two sons, Eural Claxton and Thomas W. Claxton, both of Athens; two daughters; Jeanette Holt of Athens and Joyce Martin of Burning Springs, KY; two step sons, Charles Burns of Athens and Fran Burns of Toney, AL; two step daughters, Judy Abernathy and Wanda Woodfin, both of Athens; two sisters, Frances Bowers and Mable Adams, both of Athens; 16 grandchildren and 12 step grandchildren; two great-granddaughters, two great grandsons and 10 step-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mark Gey, Anthony Claxton, David Nunley, Barry Holt, Jeff Claxton and Donnie Claxton.

Burtis Ray "Mutt" Harlan, Sr., age 83, of Lawrenceburg, TN passed away
Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Portsmouth,
OH, lived in Chicago, IL where he worked for Stowell & Co. and retired
as a carpenter in 1992, he and his wife then relocated that same year
to Lawrenceburg, TN. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1618 where
he served two terms as Commander and two terms as Quarter Master. He
was also a member of Chicago Local #13 Carpenter's Union, American
Legion Post 146, and Pup Tent #2 Cooties of Post 1618. Mr. Harlan
served his country honorably in the U.S. Army with the 11th Airborne
during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard C. and Gladys Nelson
Harlan; one son Jeffrey R. Harlan; and three brothers, Howard and
Jeffrey Harlan and Donald "Blackie" Austin.

JAMES 'OLIVER' COATS

James Oliver Coats, Age 89, of Bourbonnais, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at home. Oliver was born on July 15, 1923 to the late William and Mandy (Kilpatrick) Coats in Killen, AL. He proudly served his country in World War II in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. He married the former Lois Katherine Johnson on January 18, 1947.He worked in Maintenance at Riverside Medical Center for 13 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the VFW and Bourbonnais Church of Christ. He enjoyed camping and was known as a handyman.
Oliver is survived by his wife of 66 years, Katherine; two daughters, Melinda (John) Sutherland on Bonfield and Debbie (John) Jezierski of Finksburg, Maryland; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Sheila Eldridge; three brothers, Henry, R.C. and Clyde Coast and one sister, Louise Estes.
A gathering time for friends and family will be held on Thursday, Jarch 14, 2013 from 4:00 pm until 8:00pm at the Schreffler Life Story Funeral Home's Kankakee Chapel. Another gathering time for friends and family will be held on Friday March 15, 2013 from 9:00am until the time of service at 10:00am, also at the Schreffler Life Story Funeral Home's Kankakee Chapel. Ms Matthews was born in Lincoln County, TN and lived most of her life in Huntsville. She was a loving mother and an avid sports fan.
She is survived by her mother, Maymie Stevenson Picket of Huntsville, Al; son, William Mason Matthews, Jr. and his wife Allison, of Athens, Al
Visitation was from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm on Wednesday January 8, 2014 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service was at 2:00pm, Wednesday at Laughlin Chapel with Pastor Chris Barr officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Seventh Day Adventist church or to a favorite charity.
