In Memory of Their Mother
Sibble Matthews was born January 14, 1911 to Thomas Marion (Bob) Matthews and Tilda Ann (Cleveland) Matthews. Tilda Ann was known by the grand children and close friends as Bell. The early years of Sibble Matthews have many unanswered questions. She grew up around saw mills and like most people at that time lived a very simple life compared to today in the twenty-first century. Her education most likely consisted of one room schools that lasted about eight years or less.
Sibble Matthews married Cyrus Henry Adams, Sr. in 1926 in Florence, AL. Their first home was in Weeden Heights in Florence.
Cyrus Henry Adams (C. H.) is the only child of this marriage. He was born July 15, 1927. Being a mother at such a young age brought many challenges and required a very young girl to assume a huge responsibility. Sibble met these challenges and evidence of this can be seen in her first born son.
The marriage to Cyrus Adams, Sr. did not survive the challenges that life brought and a divorce was the option they chose. .
Sibble Matthews, after the divorce assumed the responsibilities and challenges of raising a young son. She had much needed help from her parents and other family members and close friends. Looking back evidence can be seen of Sibble Matthews being very successful giving her son a very good start in life, growing up along with her son.
After a few years of being a single mom, Sibble met and married Chester Edward Stanford in the year of 1935. This marriage took place in Franklin, TN in 1935 This marriage produced two daughters; Betty Jean Stanford and Carolyn Ann Stanford and two sons, Joseph Edward Stanford, Sr. and Thomas Henry Stanford. Betty Jean Stanford died shortly after birth in 1936 and was laid to rest in Franklin, TN. Moving from place to place was very much a part of the early married life of Chester and Sibble Stanford. Their first place of residence was in Franklin TN where they were married. From Franklin TN the next move was to Lone Cedar which is a part of Green Hill, AL around 1937. The next move was to Cloverdale, AL in 1937. The next move was to Rogersville, AL in 1937. The next move was to Mars Hill (close to St. Florian, in AL) in 1937. The next move was to Loretto, TN about 1942. The next seven moves were from place to place in Loretto, TN . When Sibble (Matthews) Adams, Stanford passed from this life the family residence was 414 North Main Street in Loretto, TN. Her final resting place is located north of Lawrenceburg, TN in Memorial Gardens.
In closing, we write these loving words about Sibble (Matthews), (Adams) Stanford. She was a woman that had much wisdom, a strong personality that could analyze character of a person and be always right, with the analysis. She became a Christian (baptized at Loretto, TN) All four of her children became Christians. I mentioned that she become accustomed to moving from place to place. When she left the residence that she always referred to with the sentimental comments for the last time; She said "I will never come back here again". And you know what, she was right she never did. The last time she spoke those words, she was right. She lived just a few more days. She passed from this life in 1971.
