WILLIAM MARION MATTHEWS
NOVEMBER 17, 1838 - DIED ABOUT 1864
The eldest child of Stephen James and Catherine MATTHEWS is recorded as William Marion MATTHEWS born in Lawrenceburg, Lawrence County, TN about 1838 or ’39. The 1840 Census shows one male under the age of five in the household of S.J. MATTHEWS.
Stephen James moved his young family to Lauderdale County, AL sometime after son Thomas was born in Lawrenceburg about 1845 or ’46. It was prior to the birth of Elizabeth, the first of his children born in Lauderdale County.
In 1860, S.J. Matthews, Sr. was enumerated at household # 356 in Rogersville, Lauderdale AL. Son William M. MATTHEWS' household was # 357. He was age 21, born. in TN . His occupation was listed as “Mechanic”. Isabella, his wife was age 20 and infant daughter Mary Ella, eight months old. Isabella's maiden name was JAMES. (more on JAMES Family if requested). Mary Ella may have died quite young.
William Marion MATTHEWS, Junior was born May 19, 1862 in Lexington . His daughter Irma Plott stated in her family history that another middle name of “Morgan” was added later because William had requested it. (Evidently, William was away in service at the time.)
Several Alabama CSA Military records for Thomas/T. L. and William/W. M. Matthews/Mathews (spelling variations) exists; whether or not any of them profile the sons of Stephen James and Catherine. The most likely records pertain to the 4thRegiment, AL Infantry, Company “E” that had a Pvt. W.M. Matthews; and Company “K” of the same regiment that had a Pvt. T.L. Matthews. Both are listed as Mechanics. Although younger brother Thomas Lindsey was still in his teens, he may have enlisted with his older brother.
Evidence gathered so far indicate that William Marion died in the Alton Prison Camp in Illinois. His granddaughter spent years trying to obtain solid proof of this, as well as his final resting place. In all likelihood, Williams grave site has never been found because of the lack of record keeping at the prison.
Several years after William Marion's death, or assumed death, his widow Isabella married Davis HOLOWAY on August 8, 1870 in Tennessee. They had two children, Dwight and Dee. Morgan was about nine when his mother married. He apparently ran away from home and went to live with his grandfather, Stephen James.
